Diógenes (413-323 A.C.) nació en Sinope, ciudad costera en la región de Turquía y fue el símbolo de la escuela cínica, porque hizo de su filosofía una forma de vida, bastante radical para cualquier momento en la historia. Diógenes despreciaban las convenciones sociales, esto es el comportamiento que la sociedad era en aquel momento, el lujo, riqueza y comodidad que necesitaba para vivir. Despreciaba las cosas tales y afirmó que el hombre necesitaba sólo lo básico para sobrevivir y ser feliz.
Apoyo a esta corriente de pensamiento Diogenes vivían como mendigos, alimentándose de las sobras que podrían cobrar alrededor de la ciudad con sólo una túnica vieja y haciendo un barril a su dirección. Lo conocían para vagar por las calles llevando con él un tipo de lámpara encendido, incluso durante el día, y responder a todos los que le preguntó sobre el propósito de tu vida con la frase “Estoy buscando un hombre”. Y este hombre que estaba buscando era viviendo de acuerdo a su propia naturaleza, suministrando sólo sus necesidades básicas para vivir y no vivir hasta los conceptos de sociedad superficial.

En una ocasión en la que su padre habría alterado una moneda estado Diogenes fue exiliado de su ciudad natal a Atenas, donde comenzó a practicar sus pensamientos con el estilo de vida simple y casi no hay posesiones. Sin embargo, algunos eruditos afirman que el exilio era Diógenes, porque su padre le había confiado la acuñación de estas monedas.
En Atenas, viviendo como un hombre sin hogar, Diógenes quiso ser discípulo de Antístenes, fundador de la escuela cínica, pero rechazaron a sí mismo y sólo después de mucha insistencia le otorgó el aval del discípulo. Se puede destacar un episodio en el que levanta un palo con la intención de golpear a Diógenes en la cabeza y responde con la siguiente frase: huelga, pero usted no encontrará un bastón lo bastante difícil como para hacerme renunciar a querer decirme algo , Creo que usted debe.

Demostrando lo poco que necesitaba para conformarse con eso.
